Awards For All

Ross High School has been awarded £9500.00 by Awards For All. Awards for All is a partnership between four organisations that distribute Lottery funds: the Scottish Arts Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, sportscotland and the Big Lottery Fund. The grants of between £500 and £10,000 are for projects that get people involved in their community.

The application was made to aid the purchase of specialist equipment and services to enable the growth of addition sports and physical activities on offer at the school. The grant will increase the options in three main areas in the school; Alternative PE, Girls Dance and Extra Curricular Clubs.

The sports & physical activities are:

Short Mat Bowls
The award has enabled us to buy two sets of short mat indoor bowls. As bowling is very popular in East Lothian, we thought it appropriate to give our pupils an opportunity to play in and after school. Indoor Short Mat Bowls is a fantastic sport for all abilities, genders and ages. It is hoped it will become a regular in PE and as an extended after school activity. Leading to internal and local competitions.

Archery

Although there has been some archery in class and after school. We only had limited equipment, and it was more suited to older pupils. The award has enabled us to purchase smaller bows, more arrows, targets, an additional net and other safety items. These items will enable us to open up the sport to all ages of pupils and those with additional needs. Thus archery is now much more accessible both in class and after school. It is hoped we will be able to run our own archery competitions and have our very own Ross High Robin Hood!

Dance

With Dance becoming more and more popular the demand has exceeded the ability of the school to cope. The award will enable us to employ a Dance Instructor to either take groups in class or in the after school club. Additional music centres will also be bought to increase the number of groups we can accommodate.

Table Tennis

With the addition of 3 new table tennis table's, we will be able to start both lunchtime and after school clubs. In addition we will be able to provide table tennis in classes on mass.

Basketball

The award has enabled us to buy our very own Basketball strips. This will make a huge difference to the many players at Ross, who have had to beg and borrow strips over the years. With our Basketball club growing, we felt it important to make them feel more like a team / club in local and national competitions. It is hoped these new strips will go somewhere to achieving this.

Community Sports Leaders Award

We intend to run a Sports Leaders Award this term. The Sports Leaders Award teaches our senior pupils how to coach younger pupils in different sports. Giving them their first qualification in sports coaching, and the opportunity to coach in the community. This also helps provide valuable coaches to both the lower school and other clubs in the community. The Awards For All award will help but specially adapted equipment for primary school pupils.

Health & Fitness

We also intend to purchase a number of Swiss Balls, and storage equipment. We intend to develop classes in health, fitness and weights to enable our pupils to learn to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

Ross High School would like to thank Awards for all for their generous donation, which will allow us to involve 100's of our pupils in sustainable sport and physical activity for years to come.
