Wednesday 24th October
Fortrose Academy 31 – 42 Ross H. S.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning a small band of eager basketball players and coaches met. The birds had barely woken, but the group set off on their 4-hour drive to Fortrose, just east of Inverness. The journey was uneventful until we all stopped for bacon rolls and had all sung along to Camay’s DVD, though the title of which is a closely guarded secret. Upon arriving at Fortrose Academy the merry band disembarked and had lunch in the car park. Before getting ready for their match. Fortrose we extremely accommodating and friendly, mind you it did help that Mr Gill knew all the staff, as he had previously worked in their PE department. In fact he had even taught one of the PE teachers when he was a student. The match was started and straight away Ross took the lead with baskets coming from: Ethan, Lee (2) and Ross (3), with Fortrose adding two of their own. The second quarter was a much tighter affair with Fortrose scoring nine points to Ross High’s 10, baskets from Brendan, Lee, Mathew (2) and Ross. The third quarter saw Ross High extend their led and show signs of what they were capable of, the baskets came in a flurry from, Ethan, Lee, Elliot (3) and Ross (3). Fortrose managed to score three baskets in return. The fourth quarter saw Ross sit back and relax, much to Mr Gill’s worry as many a basketball has been lost and won in the final quarter. Fortrose certainly won the final quarter 10 points to 4, with only Elliot scoring twice for Ross. All in all, a great game from Ross High having travelled for four hours in a car, and they were rewarded with a stop over at McDonalds for their efforts. Though this was more due to necessity for Mr Gill’s car due to some unwanted odours, whose owner shall remain nameless. Onto the second round, while we await the name of the opponent. Ross High Squad: 4 Ethan Smith 5 Brendan Herschall 6 Lee Irvine 7 Mathew Martin 8 Cameron McDonald 9 Thomas McGarive 11 Elliot Grive 13 Ross Cowan Coach: David Gill, Manager: Mark Urwin

Ross High School has been awarded £9500.00 by Awards For All. Awards for All is a partnership between four organisations that distribute Lottery funds: the Scottish Arts Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, sportscotland and the Big Lottery Fund. The grants of between £500 and £10,000 are for projects that get people involved in their community.
The application was made to aid the purchase of specialist equipment and services to enable the growth of addition sports and physical activities on offer at the school. The grant will increase the options in three main areas in the school; Alternative PE, Girls Dance and Extra Curricular Clubs.
The sports & physical activities are:
Short Mat Bowls
The award has enabled us to buy two sets of short mat indoor bowls. As bowling is very popular in East Lothian, we thought it appropriate to give our pupils an opportunity to play in and after school. Indoor Short Mat Bowls is a fantastic sport for all abilities, genders and ages. It is hoped it will become a regular in PE and as an extended after school activity. Leading to internal and local competitions.
Archery
Although there has been some archery in class and after school. We only had limited equipment, and it was more suited to older pupils. The award has enabled us to purchase smaller bows, more arrows, targets, an additional net and other safety items. These items will enable us to open up the sport to all ages of pupils and those with additional needs. Thus archery is now much more accessible both in class and after school. It is hoped we will be able to run our own archery competitions and have our very own Ross High Robin Hood!
Dance
With Dance becoming more and more popular the demand has exceeded the ability of the school to cope. The award will enable us to employ a Dance Instructor to either take groups in class or in the after school club. Additional music centres will also be bought to increase the number of groups we can accommodate.
Table Tennis
With the addition of 3 new table tennis table's, we will be able to start both lunchtime and after school clubs. In addition we will be able to provide table tennis in classes on mass.
Basketball
The award has enabled us to buy our very own Basketball strips. This will make a huge difference to the many players at Ross, who have had to beg and borrow strips over the years. With our Basketball club growing, we felt it important to make them feel more like a team / club in local and national competitions. It is hoped these new strips will go somewhere to achieving this.
Community Sports Leaders Award
We intend to run a Sports Leaders Award this term. The Sports Leaders Award teaches our senior pupils how to coach younger pupils in different sports. Giving them their first qualification in sports coaching, and the opportunity to coach in the community. This also helps provide valuable coaches to both the lower school and other clubs in the community. The Awards For All award will help but specially adapted equipment for primary school pupils.
Health & Fitness
We also intend to purchase a number of Swiss Balls, and storage equipment. We intend to develop classes in health, fitness and weights to enable our pupils to learn to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Ross High School would like to thank Awards for all for their generous donation, which will allow us to involve 100's of our pupils in sustainable sport and physical activity for years to come.
